On December 11th, Jon Cohen EX will be releasing a new album entitled Lorem Ipsum with Sugar Gator Records, distributed in North America through Fontana North and In Grooves.

Lorem Ipsum is the first electronic pop album of its kind in Canada, recorded almost entirely inside my iPhone. The eight tracks are an eclectic mix of musical genres including electronic, pop and danse. Mixed by Steven Chouinard (Le Couleur, Beat Market, Lisbon Lux) and featuring guest musicians, Justin Wright, Sabrina Halde (Groenland), Élodie Gros (Machine Gun Sally) and Lou Laurence (DJ Champion). I mostly composed and recorded it during the COVID confinement after not being able to play with other musicians, so I turned to my phone!

I was hoping you might be able to include the new album or video in some capacity (video premier, or playlist, review, feature etc.) sometime around the release date? I think it would make a great addition and interesting angle for you to include artists that are finding creative new ways to cope without contact with other musicians or audiences during the pandemic.

Bio
Lots of us fiddle with our iPhones on the subway on our way to the office, or on airplanes on the way to Paris. Few of us end up composing albums of original music with our heads buried deep in our laps. Jon Cohen is a lot less like lots of us, and few of us are as feverishly inspired as he is. What started out as fun and easy way to pass the time turned into a collection of songs that nods respectfully to the turn of the millennium, and winks mischievously at future. Lorem Ipsum is Jon Cohen’s Ex’s seventh studio release. Recorded almost entirely on his iPhone using a series of free apps, the eight songs on it take listeners on a journey deep inside their own minds and far out into the cosmos. In fact, Cohen may have found the unified theory of the universe that eluded Einstein to his dying day, the secret formula that jives quantum mechanics with gravity and frequency. The songs simultaneously make you want to dance, and to stand still and be awed by the sheer poetry of the words and silky smooth delivery of his voice. It is precisely this push and pull that makes the songs actually physically impossible to stop listening to. You are not encouraged to press pause. The album is a melting pot of early 2000 fuzz, from Caribou to U.S Girls, Hot Chip to Bjork, The Rapturemixed with Tame Impala and some Enofor good measure. Featuring cameos by Sabrina Halde (Groenland), Élodie Gros (Machine Gun Sally), Justin Wright & Lou Laurence (DJ Champion), and mixedby Steven Chouinard (Le Couleur/Beat Market) this album is not just the culmination of a community. Lorem Ipsumis a modern day community.

Watch out for Jon Cohen as he passes through your neck of the woods, as important as dark matter, and as mysterious. He’s been described as “like no one else in the Canadian music scene” (Exclaim!) and his lyrics have been hailed as “surreal and insightful” (Chartattack). In the meantime, plug in your airbuds and let Lorem Ipsum be your soundtrack on that subway ride to work, or soaring high over the clouds, on your way to Paris, or points beyond. In 2019 the band toured in the UK and eastern Canada in support of their last album, a collection of b-sides entitled ‘Songs Only A Mother Could Love’. In 2020 Jon organizes virtual online sessions.

Teaser Jon Cohen is a Montreal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose electrifying story-songs transport listeners into the dreamlike dance floors of their minds. His soulful tunes are rooted in 90s fuzz-washed alt rock, but they quickly reach toward the sunshine of hip-shaking electro grooves. Full of reflective abandon, familiar and strange, with all the burning hope of jumping off a cliff with a brand-new parachute.

  1. “Go Getters is an truly remarkable band effort and a combination of everyone in the band’s input. What Jon Cohen has here is a finely oiled machine” Owen Maxwell — Cult MTL“..JCEX réussit l’exploit de livrer une musique directe et dansante, menée par le beat, parfois hypnotique mais toujours catchy.” Julien Deverre — Longueur D’ondes“..On a dark dance floor filled with smoke and lasers, any listener would easily abandon all resistance.”Nicolas Pelletier — ЯReverb“If you dig a smooth, hypnotic, soul-moving beat that allows you to transcend and tip-toe over the daily trials and tribulations of this whole thing we’re living, I would strongly suggest not missing the birth of one of [Cohen’s] babies.” Adam Deane — BeatRoute
