Prior to listening to this album, I was unfamiliar with Mularz. He hails from Florida and has been involved with the band Dark Horse Flyer and other projects; however, I have not previously encountered their music either. Based on available information, Don Mularz’s primary musical focus lies in Americana and Southern Blues Rock. “Florida Street” predominantly fits within the singer-songwriter genre. The album evokes comparisons to the more serious work of Jimmy Buffett, who, beyond his well-known novelty hits, frequently explored themes related to Florida and its people. Similarly, Mularz often uses Florida as a backdrop for historical reflection or commentary on contemporary issues throughout this record.
Mularz demonstrates versatility as a multi-instrumentalist, performing a wide range of instruments on the album. He is supported by Beth Cohen (A member of Boston), Bob Taylor, and Richard Taylor. The opening track, “Mean Old World,” features a more upbeat sound, whereas the subsequent tracks adopt a more relaxed style. The title track concludes the album and has an accompanying video on YouTube, which effectively complements the lyrical content of the song. Overall, this album presents a strong entry in the singer-songwriter category and may appeal to listeners who appreciate artists such as Jimmy Buffett, Neil Young, or Bob Dylan.
