From a news letter that was sent out to indie artist and indie labels today.
Today, we’re announcing that CD Baby will stop distributing physical products on June 22, 2023. Digital distribution to places like Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music will continue, as will our support for artists at any stage of their journey. We will even have some exciting new features and offers to help you manage your music career coming soon that we can’t wait to share with you.
For those of you who have distributed physical products through CD Baby in the past (CDs, vinyl, cassettes), here is what you can expect in the months ahead:
June 22, 2023
We will discontinue physical sales and fulfilment and stop warehousing, shipping, or distributing physical products like CDs and vinyl on all channels (Alliance, Amazon Marketplace. You may still see some sales reports after this date due to reporting lags from some of our partners.
June – October 2023
You will receive an inventory management notification in your CD Baby account. Once we notify you, you will have up to 60 days to tell us to:
- Remove and return your remaining inventory to you (you pay shipping fees) OR
- Recycle your remaining inventory for you (no cost to you)
If we do not hear from you within this 60-day time frame, we will recycle your inventory for you, per our policy.
For the remainder of 2023, we will work with our partners to end our physical distribution program. Because the warehouse itself will close at the end of this program, we are unable to accept requests for removal extensions or other special handling.
This information can also be found in our help center.
It’s been an honor to help so many artists like you sell CDs, vinyl, cassettes, and DVDs for the past 25+ years. As we turn this page in our history, we look forward to continuing to help you digitally distribute, market, and earn money from your music.
